Tonight we were without Van Persie, Fabregas, Denilson, Walcott, Djourou, Clichy, Gibbs and Eboue. So those left standing or not already in Africa got a game. Pompey have no undersoil heating but fortunately tonight on the South Coast it wasn't frosty. The surface however was fairly slick and slippery which suited our game. The Pompey fans were as noisy as ever for about two minutes but given that this match was very much one way traffic they didn't stay that loud for that long, just a late rally of support to keep themselves warm as much as anything else I suspect.

You'd have expected the men in blue to be doing all the closing down but that wasn't the case. Arsenal closed Pompey down and then proceeded to pass them to death. Having passed them to death we buried them in passes with Song as ever bossing the midfield alongside the buoyant Diaby and ever improving Ramsey. Their gameplan was to hit long balls, chuck in some long throws and to keep the ball as far from the grass as possible. A predictable and not so cunning plan assuming you can get the ball, but for most of the night they couldn't.

What half chances Portsmouth had before the break came about from Arsenal errors, such as a Song slip or an Almunia partial punch. Piquionne looked to have an easy chance but he was well offside. An Arshavin solo down the middle and shot wide followed. Once our passing game was in full flow the result seemed inevitable, or as inevitable as it ever can be with our suspect defending and ability to switch off. We won a succession of corners. Good pressure from Arsenal continued and an Sagna cross to Eduardo who headed wide, thanks to not quite enough contact on the ball.

Alan Wiley still doesn't understand the advantage rule but played it anyway when there was none. An Eduardo cross to Andrey whose shot was met with a decent reflex save Begovic. A Sagna shot blocked. The free kick count against Pompey continued to rise - by full time they'd won the count 16-3. Mokoena fired well over and then proceeded to increase his personal foul count. One of which provided Arsenal with a free kick outside their box and slightly right. Edurado took it and it got a massive deflection off Kaboul to beat Hreidarsson who was theoretically guarding the near post. 0-1 Arsenal and very much a deserved lead despite the luck involved for our opener. Eduardo was then fouled twice and stayed down injured, no free kick of course from Wiley. We now had almost total control of the game and were even closing at twice the speed of Pompey.

Belhaj, their liveliest player shot wide but should have been closed down. Arsenal were defending en masse for about the only time in the game. Hughes is a dirtbag and proved it by going in late on Vermaelen. A couple of poor touches by Arshavin who was working hard but not quite on his game. A great run and cross by Nasri whose influence was growing. Arsenal worked it left and Eduardo has it in their box he stood over the ball but was not closed. So he flicked it right to Ramsey, also in their box and not closed, he moved it quickly on to Nasri who bided his time before picking his spot and drilling it low into the corner. 0-2 Arsenal after 41 minutes. The added time at long last saw Mokoena get his long overdue yellow card.

We were still managing to pass the ball around at will and laughed at Piquionne's theatrics just before the break, this was about the only thing he did all night. 'Are you Tottenham in disguise' as the half time whistle blew.

After the break it was more of the same with Arsenal bossing the game. Once again Wiley gave us an advantage where there was none. It's simple Wiley - if we have a player down and out of the game we lack the numbers to gain an advantage, especially when the foul is in our own half and there is no clear break on you Muppet. 'Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal' as the away fans could now be very clearly heard above the depressed Pompey faithful. Grant has the right face for a depressed team doesn't he? The perfect face for an undertaker in fact. A Ramsey shot, Arshavin offside. Arshavin to Ramsey to almost put him in. Edurado shot over. Nasri hauled over, hurt, but no foul was given. Fortunately it was just his hand he'd injured. We seemed to be easing off a tad but Arshavin nearly made something from a dropped cross by Begovic. Belhaj with a cross shot wide.

Our passing was still controlling the game and the possession stats were up to around 60%. Piquionne took out our Belgium. A shot by Yebda. 'You're not fit to run a pub' (?) - well that's what it sounded like at least - can anyone confirm?

Ramsey stole the ball not too far from their box, he took it on, cut inside and powered a sweet left footed strike into the corner to make it 3-0 and game over with about twenty minutes to go. This was our 50th goal of the season at about the halfway point. Rosicky came on for Eduardo. Kanu also on as a Pompey sub and appeared to be their only player who could hold onto the ball. Arsenal fans were by now warming up for the Cup with 'You can stick your f*cking hammers up your ar*e'. Good play by Kanu a pass wide, looked marginally offside but was cut back well for Belhadj to deflect it off Vermaelen past Almunia our captain. 1-3. But this was way too late for Pompey and hardly invoked so much as a token flurry.

A missed punch and a decent save follow from Manuel. Rosicky cut inside and fired one just over. A good move was worked for Song to steam into the box looking for his first goal of the season. Almost the next move saw Nasri given acres of space on the right and he found Song who had pulled away from any markers at the far post. The cross wasn't perfect but Song uses his neck muscles to good effect to power home a header and his first goal of the season. 1-4 Arsenal. 'Is there a fire drill?'

Vela on for Andrey. Nasri with a shot deflected for a corner. Ramsey with a shot blocked. Eastmond on for Nasri making his Premiership debut and he managed to win his first ball with a header, concede a corner and have a half decent shot on goal quite apart from linking well in the six or seven minutes he was on. Hughes was seriously lucky to remain on the pitch after upending Vela for what looked a certain second yellow.

What could have been a tough game turned out to be a stroll, but only because we worked hard enough for most of the game to make it so. A fair bit of work and a whole load of fine passing, more of the same please Arsenal in the Cup.

If anyone is going to break into the top four I'd expect it to be Villa, but they didn't help themselves by turning up in something resembling a Tottenham kit. To do so against the Arsenal often has dire consequences. It was definitely hip flask weather at Arsenal today, not that you're allowed to use them of course, neither can you obtain a nip from the seriously crap caterers in the lower tier. I'd don't need cold naff larger this weather thanks I need a winter warmer, how difficult is that to figure out?

No Fabregas, Robin, Rosicky, Gael, Gibbs or Nick. At least not to start with, although Cesc was just about fit enough to be up for a spot of bench warming. Villa's attacking line up was encouraging even though you knew they'd be playing just the one up front in the form of Agbonlahor who's beginning to look a bit porky. Fast but fat is how I'd assess him, also a touch on the belligerent side. Also on the chunky side for Villa were Heskey, Dunne and Petrov. But any team that fancies attacking us give our boys a decent chance. Especially given the fact that you have to rate our passing ability above most others in the Premiership, including Villa. And any team that has Luke Young and Stephen Warnock as full backs look to tempting fate.

Height wise you could see why they fancied long throws and balls pumped into our box but both Gallas and Vermaelen had massive games today to counter this all too predictable ploy. Sagna and Traore also played worthy parts in the early afternoon proceedings. Villa's best spell followed some decent early play by Arsenal which lacked both bite and penetration but suggested we could cope sufficiently well in midfield if to kill off any threat from Villa. Eduardo continued his spasmodic form and Arshavin was fairly anonymous in the first half although both showed a few encouraging touches. We won some corners and not a lot else as Villa closed us fast and worked hard.

Ed and Andrey had a limp shot each before Ashley Young had a shot deflected for a corner with Almunia well beaten. Then Cuellar shot wide with our goal gaping in a spell of Villa pressure. Downing shot wide from a half clearance. Dunne battered Almunia and the ball into our net but Phil Dowd was in minimal cautions mode, so there was no card. Gallas nearly got there from an Eduardo corner as did Diaby who headed over from one sent across by Nasri. Denislon set up Song who saw his shot deflected. Denilson was then fouled twice before getting the free kick on the edge of their area but his shot and the follow up were both blocked. We started and ended the goal less half ok but in-between times Villa had the best of it.

The most encouraging factor after the break was the sight of Carlos, Theo and Cesc all warming up. Worse yet Bill had his one dodgy moment when he gave the ball away whilst stranded upfield. Milner appeared to be receiving favourable treatment from Dowd, but it was noticeable that Villa required more fouls to keep us at bay. Ashley Young picked up a yellow card for diving and there could have been another yellow when Diaby was taken out off the ball. Eight minutes into the half Denilson disappeared down the tunnel to be replaced by Cesc and it was like throwing a switch as Arsenal saw the light and Cesc conducted proceedings. A foul by Petrov on Eduardo was well worthy of a yellow. Cesc blitzed the free kick low over Friedel's bar.

The AA man had a shot saved as we piled on the pressure. Downing lucky to win a free kick conceded by Arshavin and Agbonlahor even luckier when the big tart went down all too easily. Dunne kicked Cesc up in the air but again there was no card, just a handily placed free kick outside the box and left of centre. Cesc did what Denilson did against Hull and hammered it home just inside the post. 1-0 to the Arsenal and it was now one way traffic. Usually the first to score in big games wins it but with this being Arsenal and with twenty-five minutes left to play nothing was certain. Song booked for a dive. Carew, on for Heskey (a huge lump being replaced by a mega-lump) fouled Vermaelen in their half, such was our pressure. Gallas offside as Theo has a dig, see how we defend a one-nil lead - with Bill up front. Dunne fouled Theo and quite clearly threw the ball away, but like I said Dowd was attempting to work in a card free zone. Almunia out fast to stop an attack. Cesc haled down by Cuellar. A great break and a great cross by Theo but no one was on the end of it, that said he might have chanced his arm with a shot.

Traore broke up an attack down their right and started a seriously fast break by Theo down the right with Cesc charging down the middle. Theo's ball to his captain was perfect and Cesc met it as a ball should be met by any self-respecting genius. 2-0 Arsenal but Cesc pulled up lame as a result of his efforts. What an amazing cameo by the captain though, and what a massive heartfelt ovation as he left the field to be replaced by Ramsey.

Gallas was required to head clear. Carew had a weak headed effort. Ashley Young showed he had no left foot and Almunia saved at the feet of Agbonlahor by his near post. Play continued in piss-take mode most of the time and this included a Arshavin nutmeg. In the four minutes of added time, for god knows what, Diaby decided to stroll through the depressed Villa midfield and stroke home a shot from outside the box as if he was playing in a training match. 3-0 to the Arsenal in a second half slaughter of the Villa that will have seriously dented their aspirations of a top four place. Time still to laugh at a back pass by Dunne across his own goal that went for a corner and for Dowd to book their substitute Delph for a foul on Ramsey. This was a big, big win and will boost our confidence no end.

Two dropped points in five matches in any other season wouldn't be what's required but this season that's top four form at very least. Four points behind the Chavs with a game in hand, who'd have thought that six league games ago?

Goals: Denilson 45, Eduardo 59, Diaby 80

Match report from tonight's home win in the encounter versus Hull City. Arsenal made the most of defeats for two of the supposed top-four, Manchester United and Liverpool, as they beat Hull City 3-0 in an ill-tempered encounter. After Liverpool had lost at rock-bottom Portsmouth and United had been thrashed by Fulham earlier in the day, the Gunners moved to within two points of Sir Alex Ferguson's side and still have a game in hand on last term's champions.

There still appeared to be some bad blood between Arsene Wenger's side and the Tigers following their controversial FA Cup clash in March which ended with City alleging that Cesc Fabregas had spat in the direction of their assistant manager, Brian Horton. A frustrating first half for the home side came to life just before the break when Samir Nasri appeared to stamp on Richard Garcia's foot, sparking a fracas among a host of players from both sides.

Almost immediately, and with the three minutes of first-half stoppage time almost up, Denilson curled in a fantastic 30-yard free-kick to give Wenger's side the perfect tonic.

However, Hull had not forgotten Nasri's action and scuffles continued as the half-time whistle went, with Richard Garcia confronting Nasri and stewards being forced to come in to help keep the two sides apart.

The visitors had the perfect chance to equalise eight minutes into the second half when they won a penalty after the hapless Mikael Silvestre brought down Craig Fagan. However, Manuel Almunia saved Geovanni's weak penalty and from that moment on there was only going to be one winner.

Arsenal soon doubled their advantage when Abou Diaby surged forward before setting up Eduardo to net a simple second. Abou Diaby lashed in a 79th-minute third goal after exchanging passes with Andrey Arshavin to put a gloss on the final scoreline which flattered the Gunners.

Hull almost snatched a consolation goal when Stephen Hunt was denied by Almunia while, at the other end, Arsenal substitute Theo Walcott sent a lob inches wide and Aaron Ramsay also went close to making it 4-0. Review by Footymad

Burnley : Alexander 28 (pen)
Arsenal : Fabregas 7

It was a case of after the Lord Mayor's Show at Turf Moor as Arsenal were unable to build on the tonic of their victory at Anfield last Sunday.

The pattern of the game was illustrated in the opening moments when Gunners 'keeper Manuel Almunia was forced to tip the ball against his own crossbar. However Burnley were unable to build on their early possessional advantage and fell behind when a mistake by Andre Bikey was seized upon by Cesc Fabregas who easily found the corner of Brian Jensen's net.

Indeed the visitors could have increased their lead shortly afterwards but Samir Nasri could only find the side netting with his effort. The home team had another escape when Nasri found Andrey Arshavin whose shot beat Jensen but cannoned back off the post.

The game changed when Bikey was up-ended by central defender Thomas Vermaelen and Burnley captain Graham Alexander scored from the penalty spot, sending Almunia the wrong way.

Arsene Wenger's side suffered a blow when Fabregas had to leave with an injury to be replaced by Aaron Ramsey. Whilst Arsenal enjoyed plenty of possession in the second period, Burnley were always dangerous on the counter attack and from such a move Chris Eagles brushed aside two challenges before seeing his shot strike a post. Burley centre forward Steven Fletcher then shot over the bar and the same player thought he had scored the winner, turning in a cross from Eagles only for the assistant referee to disallow the goal for offside.

The home team's heroics ensured a well deserved point which re-enforces Burnley's home record that shows that Manchester United, Aston Villa, and now Arsenal all having failed to win on this ground.

This will be a frustrating result for Arsene Wenger's side who got themselves back into the Championship race with victory over Liverpool but in truth the Gunners did not deserve the three points as they failed to break down a stubborn Burnley rear guard in which defenders Clarke Carlisle and Stephen Jordan were outstanding. Prior to the game Clarets boss Owen Coyle promised to go toe to toe with his illustrious opponents and the likeable young boss was true to his word as his side thoroughly deserved their point in their quest to maintain Premier League survival.

Andrey Arshavin returned to haunt Liverpool for the second time in eight months at Anfield as his second-half wonder-strike saw Arsenal heap more misery on the Reds.

The diminutive Russian, who scored all four in a 4-4 draw in April, hammered home after 58 minutes to complete a Gunners comeback after a Glen Johnson own goal had cancelled out Dirk Kuyt's first-half strike.

And although they had inferior possession to their hosts, few would begrudge the Gunners the points as they moved up to third in the Premier League.

The Reds welcomed top scorer Fernando Torres back for his first start in six weeks and the Spanish striker seemed to invigorate Liverpool.

However, he failed to find the back of the net early on after a Steven Gerrard pass split the Arsenal defence in two.

Rafael Benitez's men looked a completely different side to the one which suffered a demoralising 2-1 defeat by Fiorentina on Wednesday and it came as no surprise when Kuyt slammed in the 41st minute.

But just as Liverpool looked to settle into a similar routine in the second period, disaster struck as Samir Nasri's cross caught the faintest of touches off Jamie Carragher, hit Johnson and rolled past the wrong-footed Reds keeper Jose Reina.

Within ten minutes the game had turned on its head as Arshavin touched the ball away from Johnson on the edge of the area before firing a trademark bullet-shot into the near corner.

Liverpool weren't about to relinquish the points that easily and barraged forward again but, for all their superior possession, the Reds' attacking threat seemed to have been snubbed out.

Italian Alberto Aquilani was soon introduced and, despite multiple crosses being fired into the Arsenal box, the ball would not fall for Liverpool as they stay seventh in the league - a demoralising 13 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
